Summer Reading Breakfast

For those students who participated in the Summer Reading program, there will be a breakfast in the media center on Thursday, August 25th. We'll have doughnuts, fruit, breakfast bars, juice, milk, and lots of prizes! Slips were due Friday, Aug. 19th.

Summer Reading!

For summer reading this year, CMS is partnering with the York County Library. They are planning a summer filled with good books, prizes, and special events. The theme for this summer will be "You Are Here." All rising 6th-12th grade students are eligible to participate. Stop in at any York County Library branch (Clover, Lake Wylie, York, Fort Mill, or Rock Hll) beginning June 6th to pick up your reading log. Complete 15 hours of reading, then return your completed reading log (no later than July 29th) to collect your prize (a travel journal) and enter you name into the Grand Prize drawing (for gift cards to Best Buy, Gamestop, Target, and McDonalds). When school resumes in August, I will have a breakfast (donuts & juice) and door prizes for those students who completed the summer reading log. The librarian at the public library will give you a document to return to me the first week of school (no later than Aug. 19). I hope you have a fantastic summer.... and Happy Reading!

Next week, April 11-15, we will recognize National Library Week. There will be book trivia questions, an online survey, and our favorite books posted on a bulletin board. Be sure to drop by the media center, participate in the activities, and earn prizes!

The Scholastic Book Fair will be in Room 203 beginning September 27, and end October 1, 2010. The fair will be open from 8:00 to 3:45 Monday through Thursday and 8:00-10:00 on Friday. This year, we're doing something special. Every adult that visits the fair -- a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, family friend, guardian, etc. -- gets to enter a student's name in the drawing to win a basket of books! There will be two winners -- a boy and a girl! So, students, please ask an adult to come to the book fair for you! I look forward to seeing all of you at the fair next week! Summer Reading Challenge

If you will be attending Clover Middle School next year, this summer reading challenge is for you! The idea is to read a variety of books and earn some cool prizes when you return in August! A letter (with suggested booklists) and a chart (to keep track of your reading) will be sent home with your report card. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped us with the New Moon party. We had a great turnout -- around 150 students! The students made Twilight-inspired crafts, got their pictures made with the cardboard stand-up characters, and enjoyed talking about the books and movie with their friends. Special Guest Speaker!

Today in the media center, Ian Burns, a detector dog handler with R.A.I.D. Corps, spoke to 8th graders as part of their Heroes unit. Ian has extensive training and experience working and training dogs to detect bombs, drugs, and gunpowder. He earned both a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a Combat Action Ribbon during his service in the Iraq War. We enjoyed his presentation and the tie-in with the winner of the 2008-2009 S.C. Book Award winner, Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam.

By now, you should have received your own copy of Schooled by Gordon Korman. I hope this won't be the only book you read this summer! I have a challenge for all of you who will be attending Clover Middle School next year. The idea is to read a variety of books and earn points & prizes! The main character in Schooled is a hippie, so the prizes are all hippie-related. On the school's website, you will find a chart (or game board) to guide your reading. The media center will be hosting a Twilight Party on Thursday, February 12th, during all four lunches. There will be music from the soundtrack, videos and movie trailers, refreshments, activities, crafts, prizes, and lots of fun. If you're a Twilight fan and would like to attend, be sure to register with Mrs. Boheler or Mrs. Millen in the media center. You won't be able to attend without registering first. Ireland Research

Miss Jackson's 8th grade language arts class researched Ireland and Clover's Irish sister city Larne. Students gathered information and pictures to make PhotoStory projects. They all did a great job! We want to spotlight this particular one that made a comparison between Clover and Larne. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Teen Read Week

We recently celebrated Teen Read Week. Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! Teens have so many options for entertainment, so it's important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it's free, fun, and can be done anywhere! Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. (YALSA)
